Apple did it again! They are one of the very few companies out there that cares about the consumer (excluding hardware pricing of course). This was apparent when they stood up to the record companies who wanted to jack up the price of online songs from 0.99c per download.Â
Anyway, Apple is now selling DRM-free music (through an agreement with EMI) calling it iTunes Plus. This DRM-free music is only applicable to EMI tracks purchased or previously purchased. The cost of these new tracks is $1.29 or you can pay 0.30c to make your existing EMI track library DRM-free.Â
I am a strong believer in consumer rights of transferring media purchased to different devices (without any catches). Paying 0.30c extra to buy rights that you should otherwise have is a good start. It definitely sets precedence. I would pay extra for that kind of freedom to move tracks from iTunes to any media player of choice. Plus Apple sweetened the deal by making these tracks 256kps… Go Apple!
