Apple did it again! They are one of the very few companies out there that cares about the consumer (excluding hardware pricing of course). This was apparent when they stood up to the record companies who wanted to jack up the price of online songs from 0.99c per download.

Anyway, Apple is now selling DRM-free music (through an agreement with EMI) calling it iTunes Plus.  This DRM-free music is only applicable to EMI tracks purchased or previously purchased. The cost of these new tracks is $1.29 or you can pay 0.30c to make your existing EMI track library DRM-free.

I am a strong believer in consumer rights of transferring media purchased to different devices (without any catches).  Paying 0.30c extra to buy rights that you should otherwise have is a good start.  It definitely sets precedence. I would pay extra for that kind of freedom to move tracks from iTunes to any media player of choice. Plus Apple sweetened the deal by making these tracks 256kps…  Go Apple!

For more info,  click here and download iTunes 7.2 and you are good to go!

Ever since the initial announcement of future (now present) formats Blu-ray and HD-DVD, I marveled at the outlined security detail (AACS) and said to myself, “oh man, they did it this time”……”they learned their lesson” after DVD Jon split the DVD format wide open. Well it seems they have a lot more to learn. Both Blu-ray and HD-DVD formats have been systematically taken apart for those who desire to make archived copies and backups of the discs they purchased for things such as a HTPCs or portable devices.

The urge to crack these formats wouldn’t be as intense had “the powers that be” not reneged on an original feature of these formats called “Managed Copy”.  Despite people yearning for the ability to copy their movies (not for the main purpose of serving up to the torrents) to place on other devices (ipod, central home servers,etc.).. ….has “the powers that be” decided to make people quote unquote legally copy movies they have purchased….that would be a NO. They ultimately blame the delay of this feature on technological issues….ultimately does “the man” ever plan to bring this feature to us…you be the judge.
